Single and Multilayer Transducers

Piezoelectric Fiber Composites (PFC's)

  • Strength: Fine ceramic fiber composites provide increased specific strength over monolithic materials, as a result of the fiber load sharing mechanism. Potted or laminated with durable polyethylene sheets further improve toughness.

  • Conformability: Actuators, sensors and energy harvesters can be produced in user defined shapes inexpensively (including complex shapes).

  • High performance: PFC’s have higher performance than planar monolithic piezoceramics.

  • Flexible: Gain additional design flexibility and ability to create complex motion, such as twisting, even on isotropic structures. The orthotropic nature of the unidirectional fibers and interdigital electrode permits effective design of modal actuators and sensors.

Piezoelectric Multilayer Composites (PMC's)

  • Cost Effective: PMC’s are inexpensive to fabricate

  • 1-3 composites

  • User defined shapes and frequencies

  • Robustness to damage, even at extreme load levels (some shock tested to 60,000G’s)

  • Excellent for compression loads
